RCMS PTSA Model United Nations 2007

The Roberto Clemente Middle School students participated in a Model United Nations event on Thursday Nov. 15, 2007.
The students represented the countries of France, Italy, China, Japan, Sri Lanka, India, The Czech Republic, Great Britain, United States, Mongolia, Nigeria, and Korea. They researched problems of worldwide importance and formed position papers for their respective countries, then combined the positions and drafted a resolution for debate by the entire assembly. After an interesting and passionate set of discussions the General Assembly and Security Council voted on each resolution. An evening social reception was also held for students and their guests, consisting of Pizza and Ice Cream. A summary of each problem, the proposed resolution, and approval status for each are provided below.

Committee Problem: Equal Education for Girls in Schools.
The hypothetical problem involved a country denying education to young women on religious grounds. The following resolution was rejected by the General Assembly by a 9-3 vote: "Resolved, that every child should be provided the opportunity to attend school, regardless of sex. In order to achieve this goal an embargo will be placed within 2 months on any nation not providing equal educational opportunity, excluding humanitarian supplies. If non-conforming countries choose to accept the equal access rules then UNESCO will provide additional support for schools in that country, as well as an advisory committee for the schools."
Committee Problem: Global Warming:
The problem addressed the Kyoto protocols to address Global Warming and Climate Change. The following resolution was approved by the General Assembly by a vote of 11-1 and approved by the Security Council by a vote of 5-0. "Resolved - that Worldwide awareness is the first step to address the problem of Global Warming. Resolve that Global Warming is an issue that must be fought by every person in every nation across the world. If everyone understand that Global Warming is real and needs to be solved then bigger steps can be taken to solve the crisis, such as increased use of renewable energy sources. Resolved that the people on earth will work together to achieve the goal of a greater world."
Committee Problem: Computer Waste
This problem involved thee Basel Convention on safe disposal of computer waste. The following resolution was approved by the General Assembly on a vote of 8-4, but subsequently vetoed by the Security Council as an item of special interest. "Resolved, that all countries shall sign the Basel Convention treaty, and that all countries shall create a special recycling center where electronic waste can be safely recycled, and that these centers be operating within 2 years.
Committee Problem: Child Labor & Minimum Age Laws.
This problem addressed the perennial problem of exploiting children for labor. The following resolution was rejected by the General Assembly by a vote of 8 to 4. "Resolved, that there shall be a worldwide minimum age of 15 for children to work, achieved by all countries by the year 2023. Resolved also that the UN will sponsor an annual meeting to discuss ways to eliminate Child Labor and that countries that need additional support can be aided through this yearly conference, where countries that have reached the standard age can discuss previous successful strategies and resources."
